Why Cycle?

Why Cycle?

Over the past ten years, there has been a significant trend towards providing a more sustainable transport infrastructure. We are always hearing in the media the madness of the ‘School Run' clogging up roads at peak times, child obesity, and a poor and unreliable public transport system.

Urban Engineering working with many Local Authorities, Employers and Sustrans, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity, are trying to change this by putting in place practical and innovative methods of travel that benefit individual health and the environment.

One initiative is the National Cycle Network, which operates over 230 million journeys each year, taking kids to school and workers to work. Over 33% of kids would like to cycle to school, yet only 2% do. Working with Sustrans, Urban Engineering are helping to change this by supporting the Safe Routes to Schools and Bike It schemes working with young people and schools to make cycling and walking to school both safe and fun. Commuting by bike, particularly in congested urban areas, can bring all sorts of benefits.

Independence:

Say goodbye to restricted parking zones, irregular public transport, the last bus home and gridlocked traffic. On a bike you can be flexible and spontaneous, make an unplanned visit to a shop, a park, meet a friend, etc.

Lower travel costs:

If you are currently spending as little as £1.20 a day on fares or petrol, changing to cycling could save over £200 a year - money which can be spent on other things. If the commute costs more the savings are even bigger!

Health and fitness:

Gentle regular exercise - just 20 miles a week can halve the risk of heart attack. You will arrive at work with a clearer head ready to go without the need of a coffee pick-me-up. Longer term you could expect to firm up, lose weight, and improve your heart rate.

Saving time:

No waiting in queues for the bus or the car park. It is amazing how much faster you can be on a bike instead of traveling by car - especially during peak hours or congested areas.

Reliability:

Once you have researched and tried out your route, you will find that your journey time is predictable - bringing peace of mind rather than driving and arriving at work stressed out.
